January, 2023 Trip to Puerto Rico

TRIP DETAILS:

January 8-14, 2023

20 spaces

Cost – $700 Age: 16+

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!! (closes November 1st). Our mission trips to San Juan in 2019 and 2022 were so successful and so rewarding that we are heading back for a third trip to repair homes damaged by Hurricane Maria, and now Fiona.   Hurricane Maria, a category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 155 mph, devastated Puerto Rico in September of 2017. FEMA estimated that 53% of all structures on the island were significantly damaged. Now, 5 years later, thousands of families in Puerto Rican are still living in damaged homes or crowded in with family members waiting for the day when their home can be made livable again. This year, Hurricane Fiona caused further widespread damage and complications. The need is great, and we are delighted to be working with the SBP Puerto Rico team, who share their professional skills with friendship and fun.

The cost of the trip is $700 per volunteer, which covers the flights, housing, food, and rental vehicles. A deposit of half the trip cost ($350) is due at time of registration so DreamBuilders can reserve the flights, housing and rental vehicles. The remaining $350 is due by November 13th. You are also welcome to pay in-full at time of registration.

We have reserved great housing in apartments a few blocks from the beach and near restaurants and shops. The average temperature in Puerto Rico in January is between 80-83 degrees.

Volunteers help with many different phases of construction such as mucking & gutting, demolition, drywall, mudding or spackling, priming, painting, flooring, trim, doors and final punch. All training, safety instruction/gear and supervision provided. Costs include lodging in San Juan, most meals, airfare, and ground transportation.

SBP has COVID protocols in place to protect their staff, the home owners, and the volunteers. More information about SBP’s efforts in Puerto Rico and their COVID protocols can be found on their website: sbpusa.org.
